The Buzz: "Security for the solo boater"
Inventor: Charles Blackburn; boatsafetyproducts.com

This gadget looks so simple that it was easy to dismiss. In face, I bypassed this one a couple of times on the show floor before realizing upon a third pass that it's really clever and takes the place of, and improves on, something you might rig yourself.

"I was setting up the down riggers aboard my 23-foot Sea Ray on Lake Norman [North Carolina] when I slipped and went overboard," says Charles Blackburn, a retired sales manager for General Electric.  "I was alone, and the boat was drifting faster than I could swim.  I barely made shore."

The episode never fully left Blackburn's mind, and eight months later he work up at 2 a.m. with an idea that would make boating on your own safer.  You clip one end of the 20-foot strap to your life jacket.  The other end has two clips: one for the kill switch, the other to attach to something on the boat.  This gives you plenty of scope to roam around the boat.  If you fall overboard, the motor stops and you can pull yourself back to the boat.  If the situation becomes dangerous, there's a quick-disconnect at the life-jacket side.  It's that simple ... and smart.
